Eco Committee
Coagh Primary School Eco-Committee has been established for many years as part of our involvement in the Eco-Schools scheme.
“Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life.”
Schools work towards gaining one of three internationally recognised awards – Bronze, Silver and the Green Flag award, which symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity
In June 2022 Coagh Primary School achieved its 6th Green Flag Award.
The Eco-Schools programme is focused on nine key topics. These are: Energy, Water, Biodiversity, School grounds, Healthy Living, Transport, Litter, Waste, Global Citizenship.
Children are the driving force behind Eco-Schools – they lead the Eco-Committee and help to carry out an audit to assess the environmental performance of the school.
In conjunction with the rest of the school and the wider community, it’s the pupils who decide the environmental themes they want to address and how they’re going to do it.
Any pupil from P4 – P7 can put themselves forward to become a member of the Eco Committee. Each year we hold a special election day when candidates are voted for by their classmates. The Committee is made up of members from each class P4-P7.
To date this has included; carrying out an environmental audit and developing an action plan for the school, tree, bulb and shrub planting, clearing areas for growing, Waste Week and Switch Off Fortnight campaigns, assemblies, regular recycling collections, composting, cash for clobber etc.
