Primary 4 Become Ancient Egyptian Scientists!

18th Feb 2026

Mummifying Tomatoes in Our Classroom

Primary 4 have been learning all about Ancient Egypt, and this week we took on the role of Egyptian embalmers as we began our very own mummified tomatoes experiment!

To understand how the Ancient Egyptians preserved bodies thousands of years ago, we decided to try using tomatoes instead of pharaohs!

? Making Our Own Natron

Just like the Egyptians, we needed natron, a special drying mixture used for mummification. We made our own classroom version by carefully measuring and mixing salt with baking powder. This helps draw out moisture and preserve the tomato over time.

Each pupil prepared a tomato by removing the inside pulp and then covering it completely in our homemade natron. We placed the tomatoes in labelled containers.

? What Happens Next?

Now comes the exciting part—waiting!
Over the next few weeks, we’ll check on our tomatoes to see how well the natron has worked. Pupils will observe changes, record their findings, and compare their results to what we have learned about mummification in Ancient Egypt.

? A Great Learning Experience

This hands-on experiment is helping Primary 4 connect history with science. We can’t wait to open our containers and discover what has happened to our tomatoes!
