Making ice balloons in P1!
Over the past two weeks, our P1 pupils have been busy exploring the wonderful story ‘The Blue Balloon’ during Literacy time.
As part of our learning, we had lots of fun discovering all the things an ordinary balloon can do! From stretching and squeezing them to making funny squeaky noises and watching them zoom around the classroom, there was great excitement and laughter.
To bring our topic to a close, we decided to carry out a very special experiment — making ice balloons! With all hands on deck, everyone helped to fill the balloons with water, carry them carefully up the corridor, and place them into the freezer. Before they were frozen, all of the children had the opportunity to feel the water balloons and talk about how they felt in their hands. There were great discussions about how squishy, bouncy and soft they were.
The next day brought great anticipation! The excitement was clear as the pupils explored the balloons again after they had been in the freezer, discussing the differences they noticed. They compared the soft, squishy water balloons to the cold, hard ice balloons and talked about how the texture and temperature had changed. Lots of wonderful describing words could be heard throughout the lesson, including freezing, slippery, hard, smooth and heavy.
It has been a fantastic way to develop our Literacy skills while also encouraging curiosity, discussion, and hands-on learning. Well done to all our fantastic P1 pupils for their enthusiasm during this Literacy topic!
