Northern Ireland Pearson Cup 2019

8th Apr 2019

Having qualified for the Pearson Cup the Boy’s Hockey Team made the long journey to ‘Playball’ (Stormont) today along with 23 other teams from across Ulster.

Coagh were drawn in Group 1 along with Bocombra, Strandtown, Portrush, Ballynahinch and Mossley. The results were:

Coagh vs Strandtown (2:1 victory with Robbie scoring 2 goals)

Coagh vs Bocombra (4:1 defeat, Robbie 1 goal)

Coagh vs Portrush (4:0 victory, Robbie 4 goals)

Coagh vs Ballynahinch (0:0 draw)

Coagh vs Mossley (2:0 victory, Robbie 2 goals)

During the group stages the team were resolute in defence with Toby and Jayden while Daniel made some great saves to ensure that 3 ‘clean’ sheets were kept. Noah, Joshua and Ben made some great runs and passes to allow Robbie to opportunity to score the goals.

The Boys finished 2nd in their group and progressed to the next stage of the ‘Cup’ competition. This time they were drawn in a group with Inchmarlo and Hardy Memorial. The first game against eventual ‘Pearson Cup’ winners Inchmarlo ended in a 3:0 defeat. The boys picked themselves up fantastically to finish with a 2:1 victory over Hardy Memorial (Robbie scoring both goals). This meant that Coagh finished 2nd in the group with only the winners progressing to the semi finals.

Having missed out on a semi final spot the team was eliminated. As there was no playoff for the minor positions this means that Coagh Primary School finished somewhere between 5th and 8th position out of over 200 Primary Schools that entered the qualifying stages (Cracking Achievement!)

While all the boys in the team played brilliantly, special mentions go to Daniel who produced some fantastic saves and Robbie who showed his skills and precision today!

Team- Daniel (GK), Toby, Jayden, Robbie, Noah, Ben and Joshua.

Well done to the other 3 local schools who we shared a bus with today. Moneymore were eliminated at the same stage as ourselves while Donaghey made it to the semi finals before losing to Downshire. Cookstown Primary made it to the final of the ‘Plate’ competition where they narrowly lost a competitive match.

Following the achievements of Cookstown Mini Hockey Club yesterday and the fact that four local schools made it to the NI finals today means that the future looks bright for Cookstown Hockey over the next few years.
